A Message from the Director
Our Institute
The Institute of Mathematical Sciences at ShanghaiTech University will commence in Fall 2018. The mission of the institute is to cultivate a new generation of creative talents in all areas of mathematics. New faculty members from all mathematical disciplines are currently being recruited around the globe and will join the ranks of world class researchers at the university. New students in our mathematics major will benefit from the modern curricula that are being actively developed and will have ample opportunities to explore the boundless mathematical world. The institute will also be a rigorous training ground for curious minds majoring in other science and technology disciplines at ShanghaiTech.
Our Research
The institute advocates academic freedom, originality and perseverance. The institute will provide an ideal physical infrastructure and a stimulating intellectual environment for researchers. Faculty members will be supported by excellent opportunities to hire postdoctoral researchers and doctoral students. The institute will regularly hold international research conferences and longer research programs and host many visiting professors, for both short-term and long-term.
Our Teaching
According to Han Yu (768-824), a student should aspire to surpass his teacher, and a teacher is not necessarily more talented than his students. Zhu Xi (1130-1200) advised that skeptics should be taught to believe and believers to doubt. The institute upholds these ancient wisdoms. The faculty aims to cultivate student’s interests with passion and encouragement; Students are encouraged to embrace challenges with enthusiasm and confidence. The institute aims at helping those with aspirations in mathematical research realize their dreams, and preparing others with rigorous trainings to become creative and independently minded educators, engineers and scientists in their local communities, the nation and the world.

Located in one of the fastest growing regions in the country, the institute is poised to supply well-trained analytic minds to the dynamic economy of the region and beyond. Through its worldwide recruitment of highly regarded young faculty and the training of talented graduate and undergraduate students, the institute strives to establish itself as a world class mathematical research and education center in the country.
