Abstract: This talk presents two families of a posteriori error estimates motivated by iterative solvers. The first family applies simple smoothers (Jacobi/Gauss-Seidel iteration), on an auxiliary finer mesh to process the finite element residual for a posteriori error control. The second family makes use of auxiliary space preconditioning on the continuous level to construct a posteriori error estimates in H(curl)/H(div)/H(divdiv). The proposed error estimators are user-friendly and robust with respect to polynomial degrees and physical parameters. Numerical experiments include Biot, convection-diffusion, Helmholtz, biharmonic, Maxwell and Hodge-Laplace equations. The material is based on joint works with Ludmil Zikatanov and Han Shui.
