Abstract: We begin by introducing the background and mathematical framework of special Kähler structures. We then recall the local models for singularities of one-dimensional special Kähler structures whose associated cubic differentials are meromorphic. We also review an existence theorem for such structures on the Riemann sphere. Finally, we discuss recent progress on local models for singularities of the special Kähler metric on the SL_2(C) Hitchin base of a compact Riemann surface of genus greater than one. This is based on joint works with Andriy Haydys, Zhenxi Huang and Shuo Wang.
