Abstract: This talk reviews the prospects of applying some tools from category theory to help understand the relation of subjective experience to objective (physical or computational) processes. We first introduce some (philosophical) preliminaries, easing into the current debate. We also briefly outline some basic concepts from category theory to then discuss one particular example prompted by a recent reading of the integrated information theory of consciousness. This will help to highlight some potential benefits of this approach. Finally, we will speculate on some further use cases that motivate a more comprehensive framing of the debate.
