The 2024 International Conference on Geometry and Topology held in Qingtian

The 2024 International Conference on Geometry and Topology was held from June 3 to 7 in Qingtian, Zhejiang Province. The conference showcased the latest advances in aspects of geometry and topology. More than 70  scholars from around the globe convened for the weeklong event.

Professor WANG Shi of ShanghaiTech University, the lead organizer of the conference, presided over the opening ceremony on June 3. He welcomed the attendees and introduced plenary speakers.

PAN Wei, the mayor of Qingtian, and KUANG Shizhong, the president of Lishui Science and Technology Association, and Professor TU Junwu, an assistant director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences at ShanghaiTech University, addressed the audience.

Professor Tu remarked that the conference would highlight the cutting edge research by scholars at the forefront of geometry and topology studies. He expressed the confidence that the participants would engage in free exchange of ideas, critical analysis of open problems, and thoughtful discussions of the future directions for the fields.

The conference featured sixteen plenary speakers from the Chern  Institute of Mathematics at Nankai University, Harvard University, Stanford University, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and other institutions. The topics covered in these speeches included modular spaces, Kaehler geometry, geometric analysis, low-dimensional topology and geometric group theory.

Wilderich Tuschmann of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology presented recent results and open questions about the global topological properties of moduli spaces of nonnegatively curved Riemannian metrics on manifolds.

Qiongling Li of the Chern Institute reported recent results on the index and total curvature of minimal surfaces in noncompact symmetric spaces and wild harmonic bundles.

Hongbao Gao of Tsinghua University presented the recent advances on Legendrian knots and their exact Lagrangian fillings.

Shouhei Honda of the University of Tokyo provided a couple of rigidity results on flat tori in terms of harmonic maps;  and Beibei Liu from the Ohio State University talked about the the uniform convergence of hyperbolic manifolds and its applications in  counting the number of simple closed geodesics and orthogeodesics. Xiaolei Wu from the Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences discussed how one could  calculate the homology of mapping class groups of some well-know surfaces, including disk minus Cantor set,  while He Siqi He, a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, lectured on ℤ2 harmonic spinors and 1-forms.

Conference participants also went on  science popularization excursions to local elementary and secondary schools to engage students in mathematics. Zhejiang Daily, Lishui Daily, and internet media outlets including  thepaper.cn and peopletech.cn all reported on the conference and related activities.
