Abstract: Irreducible representations and their characters of finite general linear groups were computed by Green in 1955, by a combinatorial method. After that in 1980's, Lusztig classified all the irreducible representations of finite reductive groups by a geometric method, and established the theory of character sheaves, which is a geometric approach for determining their characters. In this talk, I will review them from historical point of view, and give a brief explanation on recent developments.
