Abstract: Irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds (aka compact hyperkähler manifolds) are of fundamental importance in the classification of kähler manifolds. However it is difficult to find explicit examples of them. I will survey some classical constructions of such examples in various geometric contexts, as well as some recent developments. Part of this talk is based on joint work with C.Meachan and joint work with N.Budur.
