Abstract: Calabi-Yau threefolds and G2 manifolds can be seen as six- and seven-dimensional manifolds with differential forms satisfying appropriate conditions. I hope to explain this point of view and the advantages of the seven-dimensional case before showing how the two cases can be related and describing one of the applications, to moduli spaces of structures.
