Abstract: For a given cyclic Higgs bundle over a noncompact Riemann surface, we study the space of Toda-like harmonic metrics depending on the asymptotic behavior of the deteminant of the Higgs field. Geometrically, Higgs bundles with harmonic metrics give rise to equivariant harmonic maps from the unit disk or the complex plane to the symmetric space SL(n,R)/SO(n). We attack the problem in both the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence and the partial differential equation method. This is a joint work with Takuro Mochizuki.
