Colloquium: Three-Body Problem: from Newton to Supercomputer

Abstract The famous three-body problem can be traced back to Newton in 1687, but only three families of periodic orbits were found in 300 years thereafter, until 2013 the 11 new families were found numerically.  Why is it so difficult?  The main reason is that the three-body problem is chaotic and thus has the so-called "butterfly-effect".  Therefore, its trajectory is rather sensitive to initial condition and even to numerical algorithms, as rediscovered and reported by Lorenz in 1963.  Currently, using a new numerical strategy with a new roadmap, we successfully found thousands of new periodic orbits of the three-body problem, and even a generalized Kepler's law.  These could greatly deepen and enrich our understandings about the famous three-body problem.
